The fifth senior Justice Department official to resign was accused of calling the attornies that were to be fired and offering on behalf of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales not to tarnish their reputations. Michael Elston is also accused of drawing up some of the lists of attornies to be fired. Later some of those attornies reported receiving a phone call from Elston, who suggested that if they kept silent about their firings, then the Attorney General would not say anything bad about them to Congress.
"Alberto Gonzales appears to be the last man standing, but he should have been the first to go," Schumer said. "Almost every official involved in the U.S. attorney firings is gone, but that doesn't change the simple fact that the buck stops with the attorney general."
Its intollerable that Attorney General Gonzales still has his job, while every person underneath him takes the fall. If he stacked his administration with so many rotten eggs, then he is guilty of hiring bad eggs, guilty of having poor hiring judgement, and guilty of taking advice from bad eggs.
He has not suffered any repurcussions. He's still at liberty to go about his business after everything he has done. He's probably at the local golf pro shop buying some new Golf Equipment, while everyone around him suffers.
In a lot of ways this attorney shares some very common characteristics with two other famous attornies, Bill and Hillary Clinton, the teflon couple. Their friends and allies suffered cruel fates politically, personally, legally, financially and some paid for it with their lives, but the Clintons always came out on top. Its extremely unfortunate that another attorney seems to have the same stuff the Clintons are made of.
