Civil Union Christmas Present in New Jersey

After the New Jersey State Supreme Courts decided that gay couples were entitled to the same rights as married couples, they then punted on the terminology leaving it up to the legislature to determine whether or not the rights of gay couples would be deemed a marriage or a civil union.

The New Jersey legislature was quick to respond and in rapid fire fashion pushed out a bill that will call the newly approved rights a Civil Union.  The rush to name the rights after the courts required them left advocates for marriage without gay marriage hamstrung in their campaign to thwart the naming and reverse the ruling.

New Jersey now joins the ranks of Vermont and Connecticut as the only states that allow 'Civil Unions' while Massachusetts does them one better by allowing gay couples to marry.
