Two Years in Iraq is not Enough for Reservists According to Army Chief of Staff

General Peter Schoomaker, the Army chief of Staff, told a Congressional commission that currently the regular army would need more flexibility in calling up reservists to avoid breaking the active-duty force.

Under emergency laws enacted by President Bush in 2001, Reservists can be called up for no more than 24 months from Reservists.  Apparently the Army needs more than 24 months to keep the best trained troops available and/or deployed in Iraq.  Its possible that the Army may not need to keep reservists deployed in Iraq for the full two years or even longer, but may need the reservists to backfill active duty positions at home and abroad before and after reserve deployments in Iraq.  His comments may leave more questions unanswered than they actually answered.  No mention of a new draft was mentioned.
